Here is the plan:
We will welcome the summer in style!
We will take the 5:34pm from Grand Central to Cold Spring, NY on June 21st, 2010. I will meet everyone taking the train near the clock at 5:15pm. Please try to be on time. To find the train track on the board look for the Poughkeepsie bound train at 5:34, that is the Cold Spring train. If you are running very late just pay the penalty and buy the ticket onboard.
Side note: If anyone wants to join me earlier I will be watching Spain v Honduras match at some bar near Grand Central. The game starts at 2:30pm. Just email or call me the day of to let you know what bar I will be at.
Those driving should meet us at the Cold Spring train station at 6:44pm. I want to try to get to Breakneck by 7pm to start hiking so that we can be at the top around 730 to 8pm to watch the sun set on the Hudson river. If it is raining we can always just get dinner in Cold Spring but hopefully it won't. Sunset is at 830pm. It is the longest day of the year!
The plan is to bring a bottle of wine or two or three depending on how many people we have. I will ask those of you coming to volunteer to brig some wine and we will all chip in to refund those who bought the bottles of wine. Then at the summit eat some food and drink our wine. We will come down after and catch the 10:24pm train back to Grand Central which will arrive at Grand Central at midnight.
This is a good hike for those of you who are beginners. You do need to be in reasonable shape though to climb Breakneck Ridge. It is a 1000 foot elevation which is basically the same thing as climbing the stairs all the way to the top of the Empire State Building. If you think you think you can do that, you can do this.
RSVP policy:
If you RSVP YES, you MUST show up. If you don't change your RSVP to No by 430 on Monday and you don't show up then you will be on a very special list. There are plenty of people who could use your spot. If an emergency comes up last minute or you can't leave work or you miss the train, text me, email me or call me to let me know.
Equipment (required!!!):
Headlamp
Hiking boots or sneakers
Fleece (It might get chilly at night while we sit around and eat.)
Hiking pants
Hiking shirt
Please don't wear any COTTON. COTTON KILLS!!! You can get hypothermia even in the middle of the summer from wearing cotton.
Please test your headlamp before you come. Make sure it works and you know how to use it. The worst part is finding out while hiking down that your batteries don't work or that you have no idea how to use it. So try it out the night before!
Write down my number to call me the day of the trip to either find me in Cold Spring or Grand Central.
My number is 347-683-1242.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.
Thanks,
Francisco

i had vibrams on too, work great for me ! using them for 2 years on all my hikes etc ~ gotta learn to pick your footing wisely ;)
Hey, good work on this, Francisco. Great way to spend an evening.
The Vibram Five Fingers were great going up, but not so much with the small sharp rocks going down. They're better bouldering shoes than shoes for hiking in the Northeast.
Everyone got out of the woods. We had to wait for a few people so it took us some time. Some of you guys had already left. You missed the swimming in the Hudson by the moonlight that a few of us did.
